Muscadet Sevre-et-Maine sur lie
PRODUCER: Domaine de la Chauviniere
COUNTRY: France
REGION: Liore Valley
VINTAGE: 2010
AWARDS: Gold Medal Paris 2011
To glean as much flavor and character from the grape as possible, this Muscadet Sevre-et-Maine was left sur lie ('on the lees') for several weeks. This extended contact with the lees imparts a richer, creamier mouhfeel to the wine and contributes to the general flavor profile. Chauviniere have produced a deliciously rich style of Muscadet with powerful citrus notes and a lovely saline character on the long finish.
Gaillac AOC rouge
PRODUCER: Château Larozze
COUNTRY: France
REGION: Gaillac
VINTAGE: 2010
AWARDS: Gold Medal Paris 2011
Francois Linard’s 2010 vintage is an outstanding blend of the local varieties of Duras and Fer Servadou grapes masterfully paired with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. His Château Larozze winery is on the banks of the river Tarn, home to vineyards since before the Romans.
Castillo Santa Bárbara Gran Reserva
PRODUCER: Bodegas Fernando Castro
COUNTRY: Spain
REGION: Valdepanas
VINTAGE: 2002
AWARDS: Gold Medal Paris 2011
Nestled in the hills of the Valdepenas region, south of Madrid, Bodega Fernando Castro is at the heart of La Mancha, where Don Quixote and Sancho Panza once rode. Castro’s belief in wine culture and tradition have placed his wines high on the global market with his 2002 vintage a perfect example of his craftsmanship.
Quinta da Estacao Douro tinto DOC
PRODUCER: Domingos Alves de Sousa
COUNTRY: Portugal
REGION: Douro
VINTAGE: 2010
AWARDS: Gold Medal Paris 2011
Two-time winner of the producer of the year award, Domingos Alves de Sousa and his son Tiago cultivate superb 110-year old vines on the steep slopes facing the river Douro. Their 2010 blend is a full-bodied, fruit driven Douro wine with a good backbone.
Arboreo Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC
PRODUCER: Italo Pietrantonj
COUNTRY: Italy
REGION: Abruzze
VINTAGE: 2008
AWARDS: Gold Medal Paris 2011
Italo Pietrantonj is perched on the warm slopes of the narrow valley, between the high, wild and rough mountains of the Abruzze region. Winemaker Roberta Pietrantonj works her wines in modern cellars but relies on stone oak barrels and a tank with Morano Glas tiles for maturation culminating in an old and fruity, but well structured 2008 red vintage.
Valpolicella Superiore Ripasso DOC
PRODUCER: Cantina Valetti
COUNTRY: Italy
REGION: Veneto
VINTAGE: 2009
AWARDS: Gold Medal Paris 2011
Just north of Romeo and Juliet’s Verona is the heart of the Valpolicella and in it Cantina Valetti. Strong winds from the Alps mix with the warmth of the Northern Italian plains to make Po Luca and Luigi Valetti’s 2009 vintage a full bodied, intense Ripasso.
